Cách dùng Linking Words trong VSTEP Writing (B1–B2)

1. Linking Words là gì và tại sao quan trọng trong VSTEP Writing

Trong bài thi VSTEP Writing, đặc biệt là Task 2 – Essay Writing, giám khảo đánh giá rất cao tiêu chí Coherence & Cohesion – tức là mức độ mạch lạc, logic và liên kết giữa các câu, đoạn.

Linking words (từ nối) là “chìa khóa vàng” giúp:

Kết nối ý giữa các câu và đoạn văn mượt mà.
Thể hiện rõ mối quan hệ nguyên nhân – kết quả, so sánh – đối lập, bổ sung – minh họa.
Làm cho bài viết tự nhiên, dễ đọc và đạt tiêu chí B2–C1 về Coherence.

Ví dụ:

Many students prefer studying online. However, others believe face-to-face learning is more effective.
→ Nhiều học sinh thích học online. Tuy nhiên, những người khác cho rằng học trực tiếp hiệu quả hơn.

Tip nhỏ: Khi giám khảo thấy bạn dùng từ nối học thuật đúng chỗ (như Moreover, However, As a result), họ sẽ nhận ra khả năng tổ chức ý tưởng rõ ràng – yếu tố cực kỳ quan trọng để đạt band 6.0+ tương đương B2.

2. Phân loại Linking Words thường gặp trong VSTEP Writing

a. Thêm ý (Adding information)

Từ nối	Nghĩa	Ví dụ
and	và	He likes English and Math.
also	cũng	She is hardworking and also friendly.
moreover	hơn nữa	The course is useful; moreover, it is affordable.
in addition / besides	thêm vào đó	In addition, students gain valuable experience.
not only... but also	không chỉ... mà còn	She is not only smart but also kind.

Mẹo: Band B2 nên dùng “Moreover”, “In addition”, “Not only... but also” để thể hiện sự linh hoạt.

b. Nêu nguyên nhân (Giving reasons)

Từ nối	Nghĩa	Ví dụ
because / since	bởi vì	I stayed home because it was raining.
due to / owing to	do, vì	Due to the bad weather, the event was canceled.
as	bởi vì	As it was late, we decided to go home.
for this reason	vì lý do này	For this reason, I believe online study is better.

Mẹo ghi điểm: “Due to” và “Owing to” là dạng học thuật, phù hợp với bài viết formal của Task 2.

c. Nêu kết quả (Showing results)

Từ nối	Nghĩa	Ví dụ
so	nên	It was late, so I went to bed.
therefore	do đó	The number of cars increased; therefore, pollution rose.
as a result	kết quả là	He didn’t study; as a result, he failed the exam.
consequently	hệ quả là	Consequently, many students find it difficult to focus.

Hãy xen kẽ “Therefore” và “Consequently” để tránh lặp lại.

d. Nêu đối lập (Contrast)

but	nhưng	She is young but very talented.
however	tuy nhiên	He was tired; however, he continued working.
although / even though	mặc dù	Although it rained, we went out.
whereas / while	trong khi	Some prefer cities, whereas others like the countryside.
on the other hand	mặt khác	On the one hand, cars are convenient. On the other hand, they cause pollution.

Tip: Trong Task 2, dùng “However”, “Although”, “Whereas” + câu phức giúp bạn ghi điểm ngữ pháp (Grammar Range) và tăng coherence.

e. Nêu ví dụ (Giving examples)

such as	chẳng hạn như	Many skills, such as teamwork and leadership, are important.
to illustrate	để minh họa	To illustrate, social media connects people worldwide.

f. Nêu kết luận (Conclusion)

in conclusion	tóm lại	In conclusion, technology improves our lives.
to sum up	tổng kết	To sum up, there are both pros and cons.
overall	nhìn chung	Overall, I believe education should be free.
in summary	tóm tắt	In summary, online learning is beneficial.

3. Cách dùng Linking Words “ăn điểm” B1 → B2

Band	Đặc điểm	Ví dụ
B1	Dùng từ nối đơn giản: and, but, because, so.	“I like reading because it helps me relax.”
B2	Dùng linh hoạt, kết hợp nhiều loại: however, therefore, on the other hand.	“Many students prefer studying abroad; however, it can be expensive.”

Mẹo nâng band: Khi viết Task 2, hãy đảm bảo mỗi đoạn có ít nhất 1–2 từ nối học thuật. Điều này thể hiện khả năng diễn đạt ý tưởng rõ ràng và tăng tính chuyên nghiệp. Bạn có thể tham khảo thêm cách viết mở bài, thân bài, và kết bài.

4. Bài tập luyện tập Linking Words

Viết lại đoạn sau bằng cách thêm ít nhất 3 từ nối học thuật (B2-level):

People use smartphones a lot. They can be useful. They also cause distraction.

Gợi ý đáp án:

People use smartphones a lot. Although they are useful, they also cause distraction; therefore, it is important to use them wisely.

Bạn có thể luyện thêm bằng cách viết lại đoạn Task 2 của mình, thay “and/but/so” bằng những từ nối học thuật như “Moreover”, “However”, “As a result” để bài viết tự nhiên và đạt band cao hơn.
